Lulu is an incoming PhD student in Human Nutrition under the supervision of Dr. Karakochuk. She previously completed her BSc in Integrated Science (Nutrition and Immunology) and MSc in Biostatistics at UBC, where she was able to apply learned statistical techniques to human nutrition research. Notably, she was involved in a project looking to determine the best predictors of a 12-week hemoglobin response to iron supplementation using receiver operating characteristic curve techniques among a population of non-pregnant Cambodian women.
Lulu’s primary research interests include micronutrient deficiencies and supplementation interventions particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and infants. Her thesis research will examine the most effective and safest way to prevent and treat iron deficiency in pregnancy without introducing unnecessary harm to the gut and while ensuring adequate transfer of iron to the fetus.
