Dr. Philipp Lange is Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Translational Proteogenomics of Pediatric Malignancies in the Departments of Pathology and Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is also Scientist and Scientific Lead for Precision Medicine in the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program (MC3RP) at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and Affiliate Scientist at the BC Cancer Research Centre.
Dr. Lange earned his PhD from Free University of Berlin, where he studied how changes in the protein machinery of cells cause rare childhood disease at the Max Delbruck Centre for Molecular Medicine under mentorship of Dr. Dr. T. Jentsch. During his postdoctoral work with Dr. C. Overall at UBC, Dr. Lange became a proteomics expert, using protein mass spectrometry to investigate changes in post-translational protein modification in cancer.
Dr. Lange’s research focusses on the role of proteins and the protein modifications specific to cancers, like leukemia, neuroblastoma and sarcoma, that primarily affect children, youth, and young adults. His group studies cancer-related protein changes in cell-cell communication and drug resistance, and identifies new biomarkers and drug targets. He also directs the proteomics node of the BRAvE precision medicine initiative at BC Children’s Hospital and of the national PROFYLE study. In these initiatives, he drives the development and translation of a proteomics platform and childhood cancer reference database. This platform will enable rapid validation of genomic alterations at the protein level to improve the selection of optimal therapies. His overall goal is to enable more selective and effective treatment of children and young adults suffering from cancer.
