Social Exposome Cluster Research Seminar
November 7, 2019, 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Dr. Richard Fabes and Dr. Carol Martin from the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University will present a joint seminar on Thursday November 7th.
Their talk is entitled "Peer Dynamics in Preschool: Breaking the Segregation Cycle"
Abstract: For many children, preschool is a significant transition to settings where they have choices to interact with many children with differing characteristics. Like adults, children tend to select play partners and friends who are like themselves, usually the same gender, and these choices have consequences. We will review the pervasive developmental phenomena of gender segregation and illustrate how extensive this pattern is in preschool. We will then consider evidence concerning the consequences that same-gender peer preferences exert on development and well-being for children and discuss the short-term and longer-term benefits of gender inclusion. We will also discuss several effective ways to promote gender inclusion through simple teacher-led interventions and activities.
