Media Training

Have you ever:
- been called on to share your work with journalists?
- wondered how to interest non-scholars in your research?
- wanted pointers on how to put your best self forward during media interviews?
If so, you are invited to join the Social Exposome Cluster for a media training session with UBC Media Relations and Faculty of Medicine Communications. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll learn about:
- working with Media Relations
- what media considers ‘news’
- how news stories are told
- getting your key messages across
- dealing with uncomfortable questions
- different interview formats (radio, TV, print/web)
- how to prepare
Advance homework (optional):
- Find a news story about a research finding in your field.
- Find the journal article on which it was based.
- Compare/contrast how the main finding was articulated in the journal article and how it was articulated in the news article.
Speaker bios
Erik Rolfsen, Team Lead, Faculty Media Relations, UBC Media Relations
Erik Rolfsen provides the Faculty of Medicine with media relations support and leads a team of media relations specialists who help UBC scholars from all faculties promote their newsworthy research. Before coming to UBC, he oversaw the digital news operation at The Province.
Kerry Blackadar, Communications Manager, Faculty of Medicine
Kerry Blackadar is the communications and media relations manager for the Faculty of Medicine, where she promotes new research findings and discoveries through storytelling. Before coming to UBC, Kerry worked in strategic communications for one of the largest cancer charities in the UK and as a freelance reporter, producer and copy editor in Vancouver.
